What Lies Beneath                                                             Article of the Week Feb 12-16, 2018

Our office is filled with patients who have been getting adjusted for varying amounts of time.  Some of you have just started your chiropractic care, while others have been coming for years.  For those of you who are new, you may be surprised to hear that some of the people sitting next to you have been getting adjusted since I started as a chiropractor in 1999, almost 19 years ago!

Many people who have never been to a chiropractor or who don't understand chiropractic would wonder why someone would get adjusted regularly for such a long period of time. What is the merit in maintaining your adjustment schedule, long after the symptoms that have brought you here are gone?

There are many reasons why patients make a decision to continue with preventive or wellness care even after they feel better.  For one, the symptoms that caused you to seek chiropractic care in the first place were caused by the different stresses that you place on your body from day to day.  None of us live life in a vacuum.  The stresses that cause the body to break down and cause your spine to misalign and deteriorate are present every day.

These stresses build and accumulate in your body until you cross a threshold and you experience a specific pain or symptom.  There is often a proverbial “straw that breaks the camel's back” when people succumb to an episode of back or neck pain.  What many people fail to realize is that the problem had been developing for months or years leading up to the crisis.  This iceberg photo depicts this concept perfectly.  The tip of the iceberg represents your pain (or any particular health challenge).  What lies beneath the water's surface represents the underlying causes of the crisis that have been years in the making.  Even after your pain or symptoms subside, it can take a period of time to reduce and eliminate the underlying causes, and ongoing care to prevent those causes from re-appearing.

If your philosophy is to practice reactive health care you are constantly going to be fighting an uphill battle.  People who address health problems pharmaceutically only ever address the symptoms, and never deal with the cause of poor health head-on.  It makes so much more sense to address the underlying causes of poor health by taking preventive steps to remove stress and subluxation from your body on an ongoing basis.  Your body's ability to heal is dictated by your nervous system.  If your nervous systems functions optimally your body will innately move away from sickness and toward health.

Many thanks to those of you have been donating to our Coldest Night of the Year Walk.  We have now raised $1100 for homelessness in our community!  A special thank you as well to those of you who have joined our team and have done your own fund raising for this great cause.  The walk is fast-approaching on February 24th but there is still time to get involved if you haven't already.

Best wishes for a healthy week,

Dr. Tim
